relief paintings
at World House Galleries, large in scale, suggest a contemplative
spirit associated with the Near East. This is achieved through
use of high keyed, soft tonalities, liberal employment of hieroglyphic
symbols and restraint in use of simplified, abstract compositional
elements. By manipulation of symbols which erupt through the
surface of the cement, glue and paint mixture, Samant creates
textural differentiations which are his longest technical suit.
Structural solidity and proportionate distribution of formal
ingredients are less manifest but occur in such works as 'The
Moon and the Poet', a composition derived from natural references,
where balance of mass, line, dark and light passages is achieved.
