Mohan Samant*, who is set on a visit to the U.S. for good,
is going to show this time his women. I saw those
large and powerful paintings at his studio, each of which carried
a tale. I particularly liked his dream of chasing young women.
There is imagination, feeling, and humour in his paintings.
Besides I like Mohan's poetic compositions. Formerly a member
of the now defunct Bombay's Progressive Group, Mohan Samant
is among India's foremost abstract painters. As in paintings,
he likes some kind of primitiveness in life too. He is a musician
playing on Sarangi. Mohan's studio is unique in its own way.
He has turned it into a den of a primitive hunter. Samant is
leaving for U.S. for the second time. Apart from his friends
two things will miss him most: Cafe Samovar and the pavement
in front of the Jehangir Art Gallery. I am sorry for both.
